The creative process as I see it

Updated: Apr 29, 2021

Well, the first very word that comes to my mind, immediately, when talking about creating something from scratch is: Fear!

The creative process for me starts as something more or less painful, depending on my mood on that day, or the type of thing which I'm dedicating my soul to (can be a little Fimo piece, or a big oil painting, or the in-betweens). But the urge that I feel to spend every day, at least a little tiny bit, to create something is giant-like. So I can't escape it.

Anyway, why be afraid of something you feel compelled to do? I'm not so sure how it works for me, I'm still trying to figure it out. But one of the reasons for sure is the feeling that I didn't find my path yet. My creative signature. So when beginning a new anything, facing the empty paper, canvas, whatever, is like facing all the possibilities. It's really hard for me to put away all the things that I want to do, or maybe, how to condense all the things I want to do, at that specific moment. I think this part of the creative process is more like a psychological process, or a quantum leap into your soul.

But not all is bad. I’ve learned with time that having a proper place to work, a focused mind on that moment, and more or less an idea of what you’re going to do, helps a lot. It starts by setting up your creative space, in physical and mental terms. I more or less like going to meditate. Having a part of the house specifically for that purpose, always ready to receive you, with no obstacles, just sit and do it! Let yourself feel free of everything else (forget the dishes, or the cluttered desk). Feel present in that moment, center yourself, and start the magic! But try not to fell to the other extreme, waiting until all the planets are aligned and everything is perfect!

Depending on what type of person you are, make a schedule which you can follow regularly, suiting your convenience, or otherwise make some goals to reach and scratch them out from your list once done. I like to follow a schedule because knowing that the next one or two hours will be just for doing, for example, polymer clay figures, or sketching a watercolor, helps me to focus on just one thing at a time. Since I’m very easily distracted, this is the simple way I found to tame my instinct of jumping from one thing to another, in a rather chaotic way. And once you start to see good results, you will feel that good sensation of overcoming yourself! Enjoy your creativity! See you soon!
